Three Bookbindings was originally written in 1993 when it was used as a text for a limited edition class taught by Priscilla Spitler during a Book & Paper Intensive at Fischer Texas. The present text (2005) is revised to improve and update the information.

Openings of wooden boared (top),
paper case (middle) and
sewn boards binding.
The three different bookbindings are; a historical wooden board binding, a contemporary paper cover case binding and a futuristic sewn boards binding. The wooden board binding, characteristic of northern European work of the 16th century, is an example of excellence in structure and action. The paper cover case binding reveals the significance of speed and economy and offers a story of a prototype for conservation binding. The sewn boards binding illustrates a paradox of bookbinding: that innovation springs from tradition. The experience of structure and action, speed and economy, innovation and tradition are brought together as you explore and produce these three bookbindings.
