The next steps are 1) attaching the outside fill card which is an offset for the vellum spine and 2) trimming the textblock to the finished size.

 

Outside fill:

Here Craig is attaching the outside fill cards which is accurately tipped into position using a strip of binders board as a jig.

Here is a detail of the position fill card.

Next the book blocks are trimmed to size on the head, foredge and tail sides.

Positioning the book in guillotine:

The book is carefully positioned into the guillotine cutter.

Clamping the book:

Turning down the clamp on the guillotine cutter.

Pulling the knife:

Pulling the knife handle on the guillotine to cut the book edge.

Guillotine knife:

The guillotine knife coming down to cut the book edge. This knife is razor sharp.

Stack of trimmed book blocks:

A nice neat stack of trimmed book blocks, ready for covering.
