A new book, printed by Gabriel Rummonds
BookLab II is pleased to announce that it has been selected by Gabriel Rummonds to bind his new book, On Being a California Poet an essay and two poems by Dana Gioia, with a woodcut illustration by John Balkwill. This is the first book that Gabriel has printed in 10 years.
From the colophon:
This edition of On Being a California Poet is limited to eighty copies, signed by the author and the artist. "Becoming a Redwood" was taken from The Gods of Winter, Graywolf Press, 1991; "California Hills in August," from Daily Horoscope, Graywolf Press, 1986.
Composed in Monotype Dante by Michael and Winifred Bixler and printed on dampened Magnani mouldmade paper by Gabriel Rummonds, with the assistance of Patricio Gatti, Bradley Hutchinson, John T. McQuillen, Page Thomas, and Barbara & Fred Voltmer, on the Ashendene Albion press in Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.
Quarter-bound by Craig Jensen at BookLab II with patterned papers over boards, taken from a woodcut by Lucio Passerini and printed by Bradley Hutchinson at digital Letterpress.
This project was partially funded by a Bridwell Visiting Artist Fellowship, Valerie R. Hotchkiss, director.
The binding style that we are using for the book was developed by Gary Frost and is described in detail in the original BookLab BookNote, Three Bookbindings, Part 4, Sewn Boards Binding
